Brent is where Skillcare is best known. We have been a commissioned provider for the London Borough of Brent since 2013, and it is the borough whose council recognised our work with an award. That matters more to us than any marketing line, because it came from the people who commission care and see what providers are actually like once the contract starts.

It is also the borough where we are quickest. We hold the most carers here, spread across the most rounds, which means when a call comes in we are usually reallocating someone who is already ten minutes away rather than starting from scratch. Same-day cover in Brent is normal rather than exceptional, and often it is inside two hours.

Northwick Park and Central Middlesex, both part of London North West University Healthcare, discharge into the borough constantly. We work directly with their coordinators, and being local is the whole reason we can say yes to a Friday afternoon discharge when others are quoting Monday.

Live-in care is the service Brent families ask us about most. It tends to be the choice people reach when a parent is managing at home but the family has run out of road on visiting care — and it is charged weekly rather than by the hour, so it is often less than families expect once they compare it properly.

What we provide here

Care available across Brent

Personal care at home

Washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility support, from short visits through to several calls a day. Charged by the hour, at the same rate day or night.

Live-in care

A carer living in the home, for round-the-clock support without anyone leaving the house they know. Charged at a weekly rate.

Dementia & complex care

Carers trained for the specific condition — dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke, learning disabilities and long-term conditions — with continuity treated as clinical, not cosmetic.

Hospital discharge & reablement

We take discharges from Northwick Park and Central Middlesex, both part of London North West University Healthcare. Same-day cover in Brent is routine, and a coordinator will give the ward a straight yes or no on capacity inside the hour.

Overnight support

Waking nights and sleeping nights, charged hourly like everything else — there is no separate night rate.

Respite for family carers

Regular breaks for the person doing the caring. Brent has one of the largest unpaid carer populations in London, and respite is the service families ask about last and need earliest.

In practice

Brent stories

Three composites drawn from the work we do here — a fast discharge, a live-in placement and a package that had already broken down once.

Illustrative example

A Friday discharge from Northwick Park, home the same afternoon

A discharge coordinator called at 11:20am about an 84-year-old woman in Wembley who had been in for a fractured wrist and a chest infection. Medically fit, bed needed, family working full time and unable to get there before evening.

We gave the ward a capacity answer inside forty minutes and had a carer at the flat before the patient arrived — heating on, kettle on, medication checked against the discharge summary. Four visits a day for the first fortnight, stepping down to two once she could manage her own breakfast. At the six-week review she was on one morning call.

“I had spent the morning being told nothing could happen until Monday. Somebody was in Mum’s flat before she was.”Composite of Brent hospital discharge referrals

Live-in care in Kilburn, after visiting care stopped being enough

A man in his late seventies with vascular dementia, living alone in the flat he had been in for thirty years. Four visits a day were technically covering the tasks, but the gaps between them were where things were going wrong — missed meals, a night-time wander, a daughter driving over at 2am.

We moved him to live-in care with two carers rotating, both experienced in dementia, both able to speak with him in the language he had grown up with. The family compared the weekly rate against what four daily visits plus a night sit had been costing and found it was close to level.

“We had assumed live-in was the expensive option. Nobody had ever actually sat down and done the arithmetic with us.”Composite of Brent live-in placements
Illustrative example

Picking up a package that had already broken down

A woman in Harlesden supporting her mother had been through two providers in five months. Visits arriving late or not at all, a different carer most days, and no one at the agency who could tell her what had happened on any given afternoon.

We started with three named carers rather than a rota, all living within fifteen minutes, and gave the family a single coordinator to call. The first fortnight was deliberately over-resourced so nothing slipped while trust was being rebuilt. Missed visits went to zero and stayed there.

“The difference was not the care. It was that when I rang, somebody knew who I was.”Composite of Brent packages taken over from another provider

About these examples

The stories above are illustrative — realistic composites of the work we do in Brent, written to show how care actually unfolds. They are not quotations from named clients. We are replacing them with genuine, consented client stories, and will say so plainly when we do.

Language & culture

Carers who speak your language

Brent is one of the most linguistically diverse boroughs in the country, and matching on language and culture is one of the most practical things we can offer here.

Carers working in Brent today speak English, Gujarati, Hindi and Romanian between them, and our wider team is more diverse than that short list suggests. Tell us what matters at the assessment and we will match for it where we can, or arrange interpreting support.
